Gnormalize does not support .ape with the default install, but can be added, was made into a debian package by merlwiz79.
Description:
An audio converter, a ripper, an encoder, a tag editor and a audio player.
decodes the MP3/MP4/MPC/OGG/APE/FLAC file to WAV,then normalizes the WAV to a targeted volume level and re-encodes it.
also
rip, encode, convert audio format between MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, APE and
FLAC, play audio files, change the encoding and tag properties of final
normalized files.

Using Gnormalize:
Normalization Type is on by default
The
Data tab has the settings for the Normalization Type, Selected file(if
needed), input/ouput Directories, and input/output controls.
The
Config tab has all the settings for the application, input/output
information and encoding settings(after Change Properties is checked).
The Info tab has the tag information for the Audio CD or audio file to be converted.
The Rip tab has the information on which Audio CD tracks to be ripped or files to be converted.
Adding .ape(monkey audio console) support:
Use audacious-mac.mint to add playback of .ape and encoding support for .ape in Gnormalize.
To play .ape use XMMS(recommended for older systems) or Audacious as the media player.
